Deadpool & Siryn

Well it's done.....not much to say, I like, I'm tired of looking at it, glad it's done.

The Mad Titan!

Yeah I've been draggin' ass on this one, but to be fair I was working on two at once. I've also been busy with a bunch of other stuff so :P This is my little homage to the George Perez (and every use of it after) Infinity Gauntlet #1 cover. I'm pretty happy with it, Death is probably my favorite part. If I had one little quibble, it would be Thanos seems a bit stiff for me, even though he just supposed to be standing there. So yay! another one done and it looks like it will make a nice print too.

Hopefully next week: Deadpool/Siryn

Comic signing in Iowa!

So I went with Tom to a comic signing he was doing at Limited Edition Comics in Cedar Falls Iowa yesterday. Nice store and Rob, the owner, was a great host. I was dead tired before we got there, but everyone there was really energetic and excited to see Tom, so that went away pretty fast. I was Tom's unofficial assistant for the day, but people also enjoyed some of the commissions I was working on and wanted sketches from me too, which was cool. I look forward to going there again (we were invited back). Hopefully by then the stuff Tom and I are going to be working on will be in print and I'll have something to sign myself.

Here are some pics (I might put up a few more later). First two are of Tom doing sketches and talking with the fans. The last one is him messing up our posed shot with the twenty pound steel Captain America shield.....

More nerd fun with Cap's shield added.

Fallcon- day 2

So here are some more pics from Fallcon. A few of the costumed attendees who were strolling by my table and a Domino sketch for a fan. I was busy doing sketches the whole time for both days and only got about 2o minutes to walk around towards the end of today. Which is good, cause I was making money, but sucked cause I barely lifted my head from my sketch pad. I'll be posting more photos I took with Tom's camera in a couple days.

For my first convention as a "creator" I had a great time. I made some good money, met some really cool people and enjoyed a lot of positive response to my work.

Some more photos- Keith Champagne, me, and Tom Nguyen. The other photo is of Keith, Tom, and Tom's model, Talia.

Added a couple more commissioned sketches...

Fallcon- day 1

So today was awesome! I sold a bunch of stuff and was packed with sketches all day. I got to use the bathroom once and spent the rest of the day drawing. I wasn't ready to be inundated with a bunch of sketch requests right off the bat, but that's what happened. Here are a few I took pics of. Not my best stuff, but I was trying to crank them out to get 'em all done.

I'll have more to say tomorrow...

Added some pics my good buddy Kurt took on the first day.

Doug Mahnke inks!

Here it is! Doug's inks on my pencils and it looks freakin' awesome! It's great to see how my stuff looks with a pro putting his spin on it. I changed Hal's hair from the previous drawing and tweaked some of the anatomy before Doug went to town. I'm framing the original and slapping it up on my wall. I'll be selling this as a print at Fallcon this weekend.

Sketch Cards...

Some examples of the sketch cards I'll be selling at Fallcon. They took longer than I expected, I thought I could just bang 'em out real quick, but I ended up getting to involved in them. I do like how they came out and they were kinda fun to do.

Print for Fallcon '09

My pencils for a print for Fallcon. So it looks like there are going to be two variations of this now, one with a different Hal (and Kilowog in the background), with those two drawn and inked by Anthony Hary. The 0ther print is of the pencils shown here, which will be inked by Doug Mahnke. Both will be available at Doug's table at Fallcon, Oct 10th and 11th.

Closest I'll ever get to Arisia....

So in issue 39 of Green Lantern Corp I make a cameo appearence. I'm the Daxamite next to Arisia with the poor taste in facial hair (she's totally checking out my comic self with a sideways glance!). As always, thank you Pat, Doug, and Tom.

Soon to be published work....

Last night I helped Tom on his upcoming instructional book. I got to work on some pinups and various other drawings. This is the pinup that is going to be used, I layed it out, Tom tightened it up (didn't have to change much at all he said) and Jon Alderink colored it. So it gets to be in the book with all our signatures on it......YAAAAAAAAAY!!!

Cloak & Dagger

So this was an interesting piece. It went fairly quickly and I'm happy with it. Got a little layout help from Pat and Doug wasn't drawing anything at the moment so he asked if I wanted him to ink, hell yes! He stayed pretty faithful to my lines and embellished only a little bit. I took it to Tom Nguyen's house to scan and he added a bit of feathering to Cloak's hands, so all in all, this piece is my own little "Green Lantern" artists jam on Marvel characters...

Next up: The Mad Titan....

Daken

Last piece to be scanned at MCAD, I am done, withdrew today. Yay! Now Jake just has to pay me $1,000 per commission so I can pay off my student loans.....

Here's Daken, Wolverine's derivative offspring, in a blown up building or something. This took way longer than it ever should have. Not because I was working on it the whole time, but mainly because I worked on it for about thirty minutes once a week or so. This is also the last time I do some rubble background unless it is actually needed. I like it though, it's darker and I feel like I channeled a bit of Mahnke through out the process.
Crap, not sure where I got the reference for the costume below his waist, but it's wrong. I'll fix it and re-post.
Next up: Cloak & Dagger!

Dr. Doom and Scarlet Witch

Another piece done. I'm quite happy with this one, even though It took a while getting around to finishing it. A nice simple composition, with skulls, figures and capes. Not much to say, I like it.

Next up: Daken (Wolverine's kid)

Teen Titans

I started reading Eddy Barrows' run on Teen Titans and really wanted to do a piece with all the female members of the Titans. Jake ok'ed it and so we have this piece which I am pretty happy with. It took longer than expected, mainly because I was draggin' ass on it and I had to rework my layout. The thumbnail was exactly what I wanted, but Doug made me redo the initial layout so as to be more like the thumbnail, which he liked. So far everyone's favorites seem to be Ravager and Ms. Martian, I would agree.

Oh, and thanks to Pat for help with Bombshells "shiny" look.

Already working on the next one, Dr. Doom and Scarlet Witch....

Huggin' in the forest....

Another commission in the can, this time Hulk vs. Sabretooth. A different approach than usual, I noticed I've been using the medium/medium down shot on a lot of these, so I thought it was time to pull the camera back a bit. I like the voyeuristic look of it, observing from the distance the crap that's about to go down. I happy with it, it's intense and that's what I wanted. I think I'm going to fiddle with a bit more, today was one of the few days I have a scanner available and it's close enough to done to get the point.

Next up, all the chicks from Teen Titans....

Power Girl

And the Jake Commissions continue, I don't think I'm going keep mentioning that they are Jake pieces because he knows it's his and he is the only one who reads this anyways. This time a lone Power Girl and some John Woo doves for effect. Big thanks to Pat on helping with my original layout and letting me "steal" some of his stuff. Overall I like it, but I like a piece for about a day after I finish it and then I think it sucks, but this one is again decent. My favorite part is the her 80's hair, it's like Jem, but not as outrageous, truly.......HA!......sorry.

Oops, forgot some shading on her left hand, I'll fix it before it ships!

Working on the next piece, Sabertooth vs. Hulk....

A girl and some vampires...

Another commission for Jake, Buffy and Angel vs. Blade. It was a bit tricky trying to get them all somewhat facing the "camera", but I think it worked decently enough in the end. I'm happy with the Blade likeness, Buffy and Angel are a iffy, but not bad all things considered. I do think it gets a little confusing between Angel and Blade, I'm sure inking and color would help separate them more. The sweet ass "Iron Angel" statue in the background was drawn by Doug because I love them and I made him do it.

I was going to put up the Power Girl pin up, but that will have to wait, I want to re-work her hand....

Iron Fist vs. Sagat

Finished Jake's next commission and I'm pretty happy with it. It was a relatively quick piece, but broken up between my four page final. Overall I like most of it, my only little gripe would be that I think Sagat is a bit to small. I was trying to focus mainly on Iron Fist, but it seems Sagat might get a little lost in the piece, but whatever, I like it.

Next up is Buffy and Angel vs. Blade....

Inked Guy pages

So here is the inked Guy pages I did for my inking class final. It's all pretty much done with tech pens. I still suck with a brush and I don't think I'll ever have time to really master it so pens it shall be! The pages came out decently enough, inking helped see some flaws in lighting, especially on the last page. Enjoy, I don't ink stuff unless I have to , so this might be it for a while.

Inked Guy pages (part 2)

Work to show editors! (part 1)

I've been working on this four page project for a few weeks (not round the clock). It's partly to fulfill an assignment for class and partly for my "professional" portfolio. Following the parameters of the assignment, which asked for a specific environment and progression, I have Guy Gardner on an alien planet with limited ring energy. This is why he is slogging through the jungle and climbing mountains. I had a lot of input from Doug and Pat which helped a ton even if I did have to erase some finished panels multiple times :)

So there it is, now I can get back to getting paid to draw for Jake, with the backlog of his commissions.

Oh and next portfolio piece is going to be Nightwing vs. Deathstroke on a Gotham rooftop!

Part 2

I've got Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler too, waiting there for me, yes I do!

The next commission for Jake and hopefully it makes up for the last debacle. He asked for a "cheesecake" Kitty Pryde and this is what I came up with. This was actually a lot of fun and I'm quite pleased with it. I like the the angle and the overall clean approach, plus the little noodley design elements were fun. So there ya go Jake, I would like to think this makes up for my previous lackluster performance.

So I guess Iron Fist vs. Sagat is next....

Meh....

So another commission for Jake. The idea being, Cyclops trying to keep it together while Jean and Emma both trying to get his attention. The one on the top is mine, which I'm not entirely happy with. I think I was just off the day I did the initial layout, so it seems a little dead and boring to me (sorry Jake). As I was almost finished the mighty Doug Mahnke (thanks for not mentioning it earlier Doug!) suggested I might have tried something like the sketch he did on the bottom. His sketch, which took him only a few minutes, I like ten times more than mine, but then again he is a pro.

Now onto the Kitty Pryde commission! I promise it will suck less!

Jake is helping me pay rent...

Here is another commission for Jake in Reno. This time he wanted Arisia and Kilowog, but I threw in Natu and Mogo to help the composition. It turned out to be a lot of fun except Arisia's aura got a little annoying. I like it more than the Elektra/Lady Bullseye piece, there's just more energy and movement in this one. Once again, thanks to Doug and Pat for all their suggestions and input.

More working on comics awesomeness!

So Green Lantern Corp #33 came out this week. Significant because Pat let me help out on this page. I got to draw the dead Lantern at the top of the page and the one on the bottom right, in Kyle's sketchbook. They also weren't changed at all, that's exactly how I drew them, so it's my first really real published stuff. YAY! Just wish I knew they weren't going to be tweaked because I would have fixed the girl's shoulder........oh well.

New Commission

This is a commission I did for Jake in Reno. He wanted Lady Bullseye fighting Elektra. So there ya go Jake. I wanted it to be an art nouveau kind of piece, with a Mucha style background and border. So I went with the bullseye pattern (also I guess a little Daredevil radar) for the framework of the background. I think it came out pretty nice and it's actually one of my favorite pieces as of late.
